What CPT code or codes do you use when the doctor is doing a tibial rod removal and also removing the 4 locking screws?I use 20680 and only bill once for this. Does anyone do this different?Thanks

I'm not familiar with this, so your question will help educate me, but wouldn't the removal be included in the cost of the original surgery?

Not necessarily.....most times the hardware is kept in well over the global period, which would then allow you to bill for the removal. They sometimes don't remove hardware until the patient is having...

Again, according to the AAOS, regardless of the number of screws, plates, rods or incisions - you would only code 20680 once.

When it was said that you could bill more than once, I took it to mean separate trips under the knife... once to remove a screw, maybe months later to remove a plate - not the removal of one or more...
